Benefits of Alanine Dosimetry

In addition to the Red 4034 dosimetry system, the Radiation Technology Center uses alanine dosimeters for precise dose measurement and special applications such as dose mapping, validations, low or high dose processing, and transit and static studies.

Benefits of the alanine dosimeters include:

• Most advanced commercial dosimeter found on the market
• Dose-rate dependent
• Lower uncertainty than PMMA (+/- 4.0%)
• Wide calibration range (0.45 – 88.0 kGy)
• Reduced operator dependence (no thickness of photometric measurements needed)
• Can be corrected for temperature and mass variances
• Can be read after 70+ days post-irradiation
• Easier to calibrate (no inter-comparison corrections)
